Allspicery “Pitmaster” sampler (top left), ribs meal by Sauced (top right), ribs from Urban Roots (bottom left), and cupcakes from Icing on the Cupcake (bottom right)

A July 4th celebration at home isn’t complete without food. Whether cooking in the backyard or ordering take-out, there are some local businesses ready to help create a delicious holiday meal. For those who will be firing up the grill, Allspicery has a special “Pitmaster” sampler set in stock. For $30, it comes with one ounce of each of its five most popular meat rubs: Espresso Spice Rub (which was created in collaboration with local Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters and V Miller Meats), Roast Meat Rub, BBQ Rub, Ruby Q’s Santa Maria Rub, and Steak Seasoning. Each rub is also sold individually by the ounce. Shop owner Heather Wong says they don’t have to be used on just ribs and steaks. “For those who don’t eat meat or grill, these rubs are also great on broiled veggies,” Wong said. “I regularly use the Roast Meat Rub as a soup stock when I need to make it in a pinch. Don’t be afraid to experiment.” The shop is also selling Ginger Ale and Root Beer kits that come with all the spices needed to make soda at home. The recipe is from local maker Burly Beverages. Allspicery, located across the street from the Capitol (1125 11th Street), remains closed for in-person shopping, but is available seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for order pickups (shop is closed completely on July 4), and they also offer delivery to some Sacramento addresses. Allspicery’s website is here and its phone number is 916 389 7828. If Saturday’s forecast for near-triple-digit-heat deters from outdoor grilling, Sauced restaurant at DOCO (1028 7th Street) has three family meal specials, including their “Sauced Cure Pack” that comes with one rack of ribs, one whole roasted chicken, one pound of pulled pork, one quart of baked beans, one quart of mac n cheese, one quart of jalapeno sweet heat slaw, six pieces of cornbread, and beer of your choice for $79.99. The other two meals include whole chickens and a choice of sides. Those meal deals cost between $39.99-$59.99. Orders can be placed on its website or call 916 400 4341. Urban Roots Brewery and Smokehouse, located at 1322 V Street, is also offering 4th of July specials that can be picked up on Saturday between 11 a.m. and noon. They offer three specials including “Smoked Meats (a la carte)” with eight meat options including one rack of pork ribs, two pounds of tri-tip, burnt ends, or smoked salmon, ranging from $20-$48. Its second and third options include smoked meats, two 16 oz. sides, and two crowlers (beers in 32 ounce aluminum cans) or one 4-pack of beer. Those deals range between $50-$94. All orders can be placed online or by calling 916 706 3741. And for something sweet, Icing on the Cupcake at 2416 J Street will be open on July 4th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. selling holiday-themed cupcakes available for pre-order by calling 916 303 4333. Seasonal flavors such as “blackberry cobbler” and “strawberry cheesecake” can be ordered by the dozen online for $36.18, but for cupcakes decked out in red, white and blue, it’s recommended to call the store ahead of time, as only a limited supply will be available for walk-in purchases on Saturday. Single cupcakes can also be purchased from $3.35-3.95 each, and Saturday’s special flavors include “blueberry cheesecake” and “raspberry lemonade.” Contact: morningreport@capitolmr.com.
