KEEPING UP

Light at the End

Prison Arts Collective erected a display of works yesterday made by inmates at California prisons on the wall outside the Governor’s office. The program is a part of CSU San Bernardino and it focuses on teaching the rehabilitative qualities of creating something new, or perhaps even inspiring and beautiful. Graduate students, professors and professional artists travel to the prisons, mostly in Southern California, and teach three-hour classes once a week for 15 weeks. On the 16th week they throw a party. The program is in the process of expanding to CSU Fresno. Heather Roessler, a part-time instructor with CSU San Bernardino who was there yesterday helping hang the artwork, said she’s noticed that the inmates get more out of the program then just art instruction. “They feel like they’re being heard and treated like a human,” she said. The program is one of the Arts in Corrections programs, a partnership between the California Arts Council and the Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The artwork scheduled to remain on display until January 25. Contact: Mary Beth Barber 916 429 5105.
