The office of Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg reports that a video chat he hosted Tuesday helped raise $9,760 in less than 24 hours for “Save Our Local Restaurants,” a GoFundMe page to collect donations for local restaurants, bars and its employees “who face economic harm because of the coronavirus directive to limit food operations to takeout and delivery.” Steinberg said it was like having a “virtual beer with friends” on Zoom videochat (recorded video here). The GoFundMe page says “the transparent distribution of these funds will be overseen by the executive leadership of Sacramento’s business organizations under the advisement from the Mayor’s office.” The Mayor’s office says the board making funding decisions will include representatives from Region Restaurants, Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, Greater Sacramento Area Economic Council, Visit Sacramento, Sacramento Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce, and Midtown Assn.” The Mayor’s office also says that donors can specify whether they want their money to go to provide general relief or to help a specific bar or restaurant or they can designate it to help employees who have lost income.
